Germany must urgently step up its CO2 reduction efforts immediately after the upcoming elections if it wants to prevent a spectacular miss of its 2020 climate targets, according to think tank Agora Energiewende. Instead of reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2020 as planned, the homecountry of the energy transition currently heads for a cut of merely 30 percent - much further off target than previously thought. Agora says Germany risks “probably irreparable damage” to its international reputation as a climate protection frontrunner.
